SUNDERLAND, England (AFP) - Sunderland completed on Wednesday the signing of Tottenham midfielder Teemu Tainio, with the Finland international's clubmate Pascal Chimbonda expected to follow shortly.
The pair were on Wearside on Tuesday undergoing medicals, which 28-year-old Finland international Tainio, Sunderland's first close season purchase, passed. Sunderland manager Roy Keane is also targeting two other Tottenham players - Steed Malbranque and Younes Kaboul - the Black Cats boss met the pair to discuss a move to the north east over the weekend. Keane told the club's website: "I'm delighted to sign a player of Teemu's experience and quality, he'll be a valuable addition to our squad. "Teemu has showed versatility, playing in different midfield positions for both Tottenham and his previous club, Auxerre. "But his experience in particular and the fact he has played more than 40 international games shows he has a lot to offer Sunderland." Tainio played 83 matches in all for Spurs after he signed from French outfit Auxerre scoring three times. |

Now, why don't I like Sunderland? Because that's the city where Italy lost to N. Corea during the 1966 World Cup! Do you guys remember that horrible game? That was worse than England losing to USA in the 1950 WC in Brazil!newtonheath1878 July 24th, 2008 11:36
Ah Tonto, I remember it well. July 19th 1966, Britain in bloom, the sweet smell of the English summer as I wandered down the banks of the River Wear towards the famous Roker Park in Sunderland. "Strangely quiet" I thought for a match day, a young Mackem cycled by so I asked him where all the fans were, he replied (in his broad north east accent) "Ya stupid Mancunian, the footie is bein played at the smoggies ground like". Humiliated, off I went and hitched a ride for the 30 miles to Middlesbrough where the match was being played. I drifted back to my pre-humiliated state and wandered down the banks of the River Tees towards the famous Ayresome Park just in time to watch one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.Commies 1 Azzuri 0

newtonheath, rather descriptive passage but sad memories for us Italian fans. Pascutti and Bulgarelli were two of the biggest flops in Italy's history. What unnerved me the most was the fact that when those two players stepped down the plane and into a waiting car, they were both joking and laughing!PS. Is there a way to spell check our postings?
I hate to consult the dictionary every third word. As you know, English is not my mother tongue!

Tonto, my last post on this story was a polite way to inform you that Italy were beaten by the Koreans in Middlesbrough not Sunderland. I can assure you that the Mackems (people of Sunderland) would be rather annoyed that you mixed them up with the Smoggies (people of Middlesbrough) as there is intense local rivalry.Tonto, the only way I can think of spell checking is maybe writing a draft of your comments in Microsoft Word and using the spell check facility on there (press F7 and choose English/US or English/UK) then cutting and pasting it on the blog. Hope this helps.
P.S. Is your first language French (the Canadian connection) or Italian (stating the obvious).

Tonto, they say that a Mackem (a person from Sunderland) is a Geordie (a person from Newcastle) with the brains taken out.newtonheath1878 July 24th, 2008 16:10
Paul, are you originally from the UK?phughes699 July 24th, 2008 17:18
Newtonheath1878 of cause I am. Hope you didn't mind the joke, but that is what they say in Newcastle.phughes699 July 24th, 2008 17:35
Newtonheath1878 you can find me on Facebook. OK!newtonheath1878 July 24th, 2008 17:51
I'm a proud Mancunian Paul so I found you comments quite amusing, not that a Geordie would have much brain to take out. Sorry for my stereotypical comment on Geordies, They are a canny race of people!Tontodonati July 25th, 2008 01:14
newtonheath, thank for your "polite way!" I should have looked at the FIFA's web page before opening my mouth. Somehow I thought Italy played at Sunderland.Tontodonati July 25th, 2008 01:19
newtonheath, when you mentioned Mackems and Smoggies I had no clue of what you were talking about. Now I know! We learn a new one every day.RGPII1 July 26th, 2008 20:10
Black Cats, Roy Keane, scruffy team, they are to be admired of how they got promoted and stayed up last year.
