JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has warned Luiz Felipe Scolari that he faces a battle to inspire his ageing Chelsea squad to repeat the feats they enjoyed under previous Stamford Bridge manager, Jose Mourinho.

Scolari, currently in Guangzhou, China, with Chelsea as part of their pre-season preparations, succeeded Avram Grant at the English Premier League club this month after resigning his post as Portugal coach at Euro 2008.

The Brazilian arrives in England with a top-class reputation having won the 2002 World Cup with his home nation, but United manager Ferguson, whose team beat Orlando Pirates in Durban, South Africa, on Tuesday believes restoring Chelsea to the top of the tree will not be easy for Scolari.

And he admits that 'Big Phil' faces a daunting challenge if he is to emulate the feats of Mourinho -- the self-styled Special One -- at Chelsea.

Ferguson said: "Mourinho won the title two years in a row and beat us in the FA Cup Final, so there's no-one who can improve on his record really.

@They would have to go beyond Mourinho's performance to really worry us.

"Scolari is fortunate as Chelsea have a lot of experience and that was the one thing I was a bit concerned about last season, but I don't know how far that team has got to go.

"It's hard to see where there's going to be a big improvement with a team that's really very experienced. 'Plateau' is maybe not the word, but how can they (Chelsea) accelerate beyond what they've done up to now?"

Premier League and European champions United face Chelsea in September at Stamford Bridge in their first clash since the Champions League final in Moscow in May, which United won on a penalty-shoot-out.

And Ferguson is confident that his team has the necessary youth to stay ahead of Chelsea in the race for more silverware in the coming season.

He said: "When you see the ages Chelsea have got, apart from Salomon Kalou and John Obi-Mikel, they are an experienced side.

"I'm not saying necessarily that they're old because, with the modern-day training methods, you should be playing in your thirties. What I am saying is that I don't see outstanding progress in a team that's in their thirties.

"I don't know Scolari. We played against him when we won the World Club Championship in 1990 and he has managed a lot of clubs. But he is experienced, having won the World Cup and managed Portugal, and that's one thing he has in his favour."

Sir Alex Ferguson, if I were you I would stay out of it. Don't say anything, except sweet words, because you never know when you have to eat then back!

dhonie July 23rd, 2008 02:52

I Believe Chelsea will still dangerous for MU this season..

DaJohnner July 23rd, 2008 06:36

Who does this arrogant ass t hinkn he is?....MU will win nothing (zero/nada) this season, whereas Chelsea will finish second to only Liverpool in the EPL Championship. However, Chelsea will win the FA Cup. So Ferguson...SHUT YOUR STUPID TRAP!!!!!!

Giorgio July 23rd, 2008 08:18

Sir Alex never loses the opportunity of taunting his opponents. This man has no style !!!

starfly3r July 23rd, 2008 09:22

Anyway, CHELSEA is sucks...forever sucks..use money to buy success...Why dont they just pay the English FA to make them champion??? Loser team.. Hope Liverpool or Arsenal will be better than this stupid team...

newtonheath1878 July 23rd, 2008 10:07

Sir McTaggart does it again, the mind games begin. His comments are meant to reveal signs of reaction and weakness and looking at your comments there starting to work. Long live the master of the mind games. Red Army on the MARCH!

HeMaMPaBeH July 23rd, 2008 11:08

I agree with newtonheath ..... The Scot knows his job and once again he starts a game he can win!!! Glory glory MU

phughes699 July 23rd, 2008 12:03

Good old Fergie! Wind them all up before the season has started. He is certainly very good at the mind games. Manchester United will be unstoppable next season,,,,for sure.

phughes699 July 23rd, 2008 12:06

DaJonner has no idea about football. Liverpool are living on past glories and are not a team in contention anymore.

Tontodonati July 23rd, 2008 12:40

Sir Alex Feruson a master of mind games? A 10 year old boy could have told Chelsea that their are an old team just like ACMilan are!

newtonheath1878 July 23rd, 2008 13:07

Tonto, it's not so much the factual content more rather the deliverence and timing, and it does work Tonto belive you me. I've witnessed it for many a moon and its more fool them for the people that get taken in by his comments. Alex knows there is very little between the top 3 in the EPL in terms of ability so banter makes it a little more exciting. Honestly Tonto, some of the reactions he has provoked over the years are classic. Check out Kevin Keegans outburst on Sky Sports in 1997, I'm sure it will be on You Tube or something similar. And remember people it's only a game!

Tontodonati July 23rd, 2008 13:27

newtonheath, thanks for that nice piece of information. I hope I have a chance to watch the clip you mentioned involving K. Keegan. I believe you had it right when you said that Ferguson knows the ability of the top three teams and he's trying to gain a bit of an advantage over them. On the other hand, "Sir Alex" sounds more like an instigator the likes of Marco Materazzi rather than a true intellectual!

newtonheath1878 July 23rd, 2008 13:46

Tonto, do you feel Marco's instigation produced the desired effect though?

Tontodonati July 23rd, 2008 14:02

Certainly! He did win the World Cup with Italy at the expense of Zidane and France, didn't he?

newtonheath1878 July 23rd, 2008 14:17

Tonto, so would you agree that a fair scientific explanation of intelligence is being able to adapt and evolve to suit your current environment and gain an edge in survival, If you do agree with this statement would it therefore be appropriate to suggest there is an element of intelligence in both Marco's and Alex's actions?

Tontodonati July 23rd, 2008 14:43

I would call it expediency rather than Intelligence or of what it's right and just. But yes, we must do what's necessary, short of being outright criminals, to take advantage of the existing circumstances. I would not go as far as to suggest, however, that Machiavelli was 100% correct in his famous statement: The end justifies the means," but both Ferguson and Materazzi have done, and are still doing what they do best! Truthfully neither one is a luminary of first magnitude!

BesTalentScout July 23rd, 2008 14:46

Old Fart Fergie is right, i'm afraid..........

Scolari is not shrewd enough and Chelsea is lacking team spirit since there's so many players coming and going.........

Man Utd champs again.........unless they suffer another Munich air crash or Fergie dies of heart attack or stroke.......LOL

Arsenal and Chelsea fight for 2nd........

Liverpool 4th if they're lucky..........they need 2 Torres(es) to finish higher........LOL

ajax72 July 23rd, 2008 14:47

If all ppl were this intelligent we'd be still rubbing sticks to light a fire.

Tontodonati July 23rd, 2008 15:03

Ajax, are you plagiarizing from one of my books? Ask for my permission first. As Bes TalentScout would put it ...LOL ...

newtonheath1878 July 23rd, 2008 15:03

Fair comment Tonto, but in today’s highly competitive game to have a Machiavellian trait (even if you don't fully agree with Niccollo's theory, its fair to say that it is a fair perception of personality traits) can surely only a be a benefit as sport is about outwitting your opponent; so having a "High Mach" scoring seems perfectly suited to the modern game regardless whether or not they are a shining star of stereotypical academic intelligence!

Tontodonati July 23rd, 2008 15:27

You got it! I have a playoff match just now. I'm hoping to repeat as the Lancaster Senior Golf Champ. Wish me good luck! See you guys later.

newtonheath1878 July 23rd, 2008 15:32

Good Luck Tonto, you go and spoil a good walk (only joking)

ajax72 July 23rd, 2008 15:42

OMG we have an intellectual on the blog. That tops it!

newtonheath1878 July 23rd, 2008 15:53

Ajax, I'm sure Tonto has acquired his intellect during his many years, mine though is just natural!

ajax72 July 23rd, 2008 16:22

I take it for granted but please don't forget this blog is about a very simple, straightforward game called football. Any pseudointellectual, snobish bla-bla is be offending the Beauriful Game.

newtonheath1878 July 23rd, 2008 16:56

Ajax, my last comment were meant "tongue in cheek" but is it worth me offering an explanation as I may be accused of false intelligence again, rather than seeing it for what it is. Rest assured I'm no snob Ajax, if I've offended your perception of the "Beauriful Game" I do apologise.

SAF has been on the job at United for 22 years. He's won 40 competitions in his managerial career, including 10 EPL titles, 3 SPL titles, and 2 CL titles. The man knows how to gain an advantage in these competitions, whether it be through signings, releases, or mind games.

Tontodonati July 23rd, 2008 22:34

newtonheath and Ajax, unlike you "naturals," I had to work hard to get where I am (which is nowhere really!) BTW, I did spoil a good walk. I lost the golf match, miserably! I just could not get going today. My left hip was acting up! I have a long list of excuses when I lose!

Tontodonati July 23rd, 2008 22:51

correction above: "to get to where I am."

SAJNSHE July 24th, 2008 03:25

Actually i found that u tonto r interested 2 make ur languaga all right we r speaking fairly simply a net language

Tontodonati July 24th, 2008 15:41

Sajnshe, to each his own! I take pride in what I do. A well written sentence reflex the author's mind. For those like me who do not have a handsome appearance, good diction is the best way of overcoming that deficiency!

newtonheath1878 July 24th, 2008 16:20

Hear hear Tonto!
